Old Country Easter Eggs
Ethnicity:Slovenian     Food Type:Eggs

Ingredients:
  • Onionskins from the kitchen or neighbors.
  • Rubber bands
  • Few drops of olive oil

  • Steps:
  • Don't throw away your onionskin; instead use it to decorate your Easter eggs in the traditional Slovenian fashion as did my Grandmother, Mrs. Julia Gachnik of Chisholm.

  • Collect the dry outer layers of the onion (try to get a good variety of colors.) Gently wrap the skins around your raw eggs and hold them in place with rubber bands.

  • Boil the eggs for 10-12 minutes as usual. When you unwrap them you will uncover beautiful colors and intricate patterns left by the skins.

  • You can polish the eggs by wiping them with a little olive oil.
