Don't throw away your onionskin; instead use it to decorate your Easter eggs in the traditional Slovenian fashion as did my Grandmother, Mrs. Julia Gachnik of Chisholm.
Collect the dry outer layers of the onion (try to get a good variety of colors.) Gently wrap the skins around your raw eggs and hold them in place with rubber bands.
Boil the eggs for 10-12 minutes as usual. When you unwrap them you will uncover beautiful colors and intricate patterns left by the skins.
You can polish the eggs by wiping them with a little olive oil.
